  5. Living Planet: Environment Matters Around the Globe
  6. 27 Mar 2008 at 5:30am
    Listen
Your Podscope hit is at 2:44 Visit the draining boglands of Ireland, hear how mankind is contributing to the melting of Antarctica and learn how people in Bangladesh are fighting to cope with the forces of nature. These stories and more on Living Planet this week. Tune in via the live-stream or download the programme. Send your comments to features@dw-world.de.What's to Become of Ireland's Peatlands?Ireland has a long history of harvesting peat from its wetlands but most deposits could be depleted by the end of the century. The bogs of Ireland are vast, open, treeless tracks of wilderness which were formed during the post-glacial era around 10,000 years ago. Peat deposits are found in many places around the world, most notably in Russia, Ireland, Finland and northern Germany. In countries such as Ireland and Finland, peat is harvested, compressed and used as fuel on a domestic and industrial scale. Peat extraction is seen by some conservationists as a threat to biodiversity as large scale removal threatens peat bogs which take centuries to regenerate. Living Planet visits the Midlands of Ireland to investigate the conflicting demands on the peatlands. Report: Cheryl NortheyLarge Ice Shelf Breaking off Antarctica. Is it Global Warming?A chunk of ice the size of the Isle of Man is breaking away from Antarctica but is it proof of the human role in global warming? The Wilkins Ice Shelf has been stable for most of the last century, but began retreating in the 1990s. Six ice shelves in the same part of the continent have already been lost. It is vital we reduce our emissions, say scientists, because we are increasingly witnessing the impact of human induced global warming in many parts of the world. Living Planet asks Hubertus Fischer, paleoclimatologist with the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research, whether this confirms theories of human-induced global warming. Interview: Nina HaaseWorld Switches Off its Lights During Earth HourEarth Hour is taking place on Saturday, March 29 and all over the world people will switch off their lights and appliances and some of the world's most iconic landmarks will also be dark. One of the most straightforward ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is by saving energy. That?s the message environmentalists are trying to get across to the global community again this weekend. The organizers have called their campaign Earth Hour. Living Planet asks people on the streets of Bonn whether they?ll be joining this switch-off campaign. Report: Matthew ReardonLow-Lying Bangladesh Copes With Extreme WeatherBangladesh is struggling to cope with the effects of more cyclones and rising sea level. When the furious winds of cyclone Sidr swept across the low-lying coast of Southern Bangladesh in November last year, thousands of people lost their homes and many were killed. But the impact was relatively low by Bangladeshi standards. In 1991, a tropical storm claimed roughly 150,000 lives. Since then, Bangladeshi relief agencies and the government have developed early warning systems and constructed storm shelters. But the ten million people living on the coastline of Southern Bangladesh are still vulnerable. Listen to the first part of a two-part co-production between Bangladesh Betaar and Deutsche Welle Radio. Report: Peter Koppen / Ahsan Habib
